IR in the Middle East

The culture of effective Investor Relations (IR) practice is quickly growing in the Middle East, in line with the rapidly developing regional capital markets. There have been a number of factors which have contributed to this growth.

International investors are today more global than ever before. The developments and sophistication of financial instruments and products today allow greater amount of investors across the world easier access to global opportunities.

The Middle East and other ‘new’ markets have received a great amount of attention, as investors continue to look further and deeper for new opportunities in search for alpha. The number and variety of funds with mandates to invest in the Middle East is growing, in response to a growing demand.

Evidence shows that over the last 2 years, investment flows have been increasingly heading from ‘developed’ to ‘new’ markets. Many of those investors are accustomed to certain practices with regards to disclosure, transparency, contact with management and IR.

Middle East with a very diverse and rapidly changing landscape puts forward a unique investment story and in cases, an appealing diversification opportunity.

As competition for capital has and will continue to become increasingly intense throughout the 2009, many listed firms will likely realise the benefits of effectively managing a two way dialogue with their investor base.

This has been also complimented by a number of regional factors in play, which are contributing to the growth of IR in the region.

Middle East based companies are realising the benefits of a well diversified shareholder base and are opening up more of their shareholder base to foreign institutional participants. Changes in legislation across the region is supporting this trend.

Middle East based companies are becoming increasingly active on the international capital markets on both debt and equities markets.
